Did you know?
Alberta has had the fastest growing power demand in Canada over the past five years. To meet this demand, new power plants needed to be built. Power prices in Alberta have risen to pay for these much needed power plants. This increase would have happened regardless of a regulated or deregulated market.
Alberta does not have large-scale hydro or nuclear power, like other provinces. Our key fuels are coal and natural gas with hydro and alternative power making up the rest of our supply fleet. Since most new plants are gas-fired, natural gas prices have affected power prices.
